Foyle's War makes triumphant return for ITV1

LONDON - ITV1's Sunday night favourite 'Foyle's War' has made a triumphant return, pulling in an audience of 6.7m and an average share 28.7% of all viewers, and beating BBC One's latest costume drama 'Sense and Sensibility'.

The second part of Andrew Davies's 'Sense and Sensibility' adaptation maintained its audience from last week, giving BBC One a 19.3% share of the audience, with an average 5.2m tuning in. The series has been criticised by Jane Austen fans for unnecessary raunchiness.

New US drama 'Damages', which follows the nefarious doings of lawyer Glenn Close, pulled in a 10.6% share for BBC One following the Sunday night news.

It was better news for BBC One on Saturday night, when its 'Strictly Come Dancing' follow-up, 'The One and Only', won its timeslot with 6.2m tuning in, representing 26.3% of the audience, compared with the 4.8m tuning in for ITV1's 'When Britain Had Talent'.

With Premiership football teams entering the FA Cup, football proved a big draw. BBC One's 'Match of the Day' on Saturday afternoon drew 7.4m to see Manchester United take on Aston Villa -- a 35.7% share of the audience. Sunday night's nil-nil draw between Newcastle United and Stoke had 6.2m tuning in to BBC One, a 26.4% share.

'Celebrity Big Brother Hijack', which is now only showing on E4, scored an average of 5% audience share on Friday, when 1.1m people tuned in to watch comedian Matt Lucas taking control of the house.

Audience share for Saturday was 2.9% on average, and on Sunday it was up to 3% -- a good performance for E4, but a disappointment compared with last year's series, show on Channel 4.

The channel has Russell Brand lined up to be the next hijacker, taking over from Kelly Osbourne tomorrow. According to reports, bookmaker William Hill has only taken £80 in bets on the show's outcome so far, compared to £6,300 at the same stage last year.
