Data Academy: My best data decision - Michael Toothill, Cancer

Michael Toothill, Head of data management, Cancer Research UK

- What it was

I set up a data management department at Cancer Research UK, with the strapline 'data matters'. It helped prove how important a part data capture plays in enhancing our relationship with CRUK's supporters.

- Why was it your best one?

It played to my strengths. It was a mix of building relationships with key internal stakeholders, and showing I had the ability to lead and manage data experts to get the best out of our database systems. We were able to promote the power and importance of data within the organisation.

- What was the impact on Cancer Research UK?

The data management department has had a significant impact on our ability to use supporter data to generate and sustain significant income growth from our fundraising and supporter marketing initiatives. We've experienced a 10 per cent growth year-on-year for the past five years. The development of our data business has effectively brought our supporters closer to our charity.
